Turkey Creek Wetland Alliance

For the past few years, CWP has worked to raise public awareness of development plans for one of Knox County's largest remaining wetlands, the 22-acreTurkey Creek Wetland. With other local groups, the CWP formed the Turkey Creek Wetland Alliance which called for and was granted a public hearing regarding the developers' request for permits, held educational rallies to raise awareness about the value of the urban wetland, and began a citizen initiative to collect signatures for a referendum on allocation of Knoxville city funds for the development project; to date, the alliance has collected over 3,000 signatures of concerned local voters. The City of Knoxville has set aside $4.1 million tax dollars on construction of Parkside Drive extension through Turkey Creek Wetland. Public protest has been ignored. In October 1997 approvaalliancel was given to the developers to culvert an un-named tributary that had been the focus of a public hearing in September. Destruction proceeds as planned, despite public disapproval.
